I noticed this conversation on Facebook recently, and I don't want to get into arguments on there, so I will start my own discussion here. Feel free to comment at the end, anything rude or innapropriate will be removed, but otherwise, please, share your opinions!!
There are many reasons to shop locally. These include saving on gas (both for financial and environmental reasons) to support local businesses, and of course so you can be active in your own community. I know there are other reasons, but those are mine.
Now the flip side. It is frequently more expensive to shop in small towns and downtown in bigger cities. Sometimes it is worth the drive to the big store with the lower prices. I personally make the decision on where to shop per item and depending on the day. I've a great system though!
How much more will it cost locally then if I drive a bit farther?
How much will I save on gas if I get it locally? If this evens out the cost of gas, then I know where I'm going!!
How many items do I need? If I can save money by going a bit farther, and I can get several items that I need rather then just one, and save a trip later, then it might be worth going there.
Can I even get it close to home do I need to travel?
Is the quality the same?
Considering all I've said, those are MY opinions and MY considerations. I do not feel that it is fair that people are being pressured to shop one place or another, everyone makes their own choices. There are benefits to shopping close to home, and it is wonderful to support your local businesses as they may be friends or family, and the service you get often adds to the value.
