With all the changes over the years one thing is the same, Saturday is for cartoons. Thanks to TeleToon some of them are even the same ones I used to watch. I know ther is a whole camp of mommies who think this makes me a lazy mommy, but really that's not what it's about. It's about the family time and connecting.
Yup, I said I us cartoons (TV!) to connect. Here's how it works. You pick your favorite pajamas on Friday night, eat your breakfast in front of the TV on Saturday morning with your pajamas on. I like to do something extra, like special pancakes (apple, cherry, chocolate chip... the choices are endless) so we can do something together, then we cuddle up together and eat our breakfast. Now if you just ignore the TV while your kids watch, you may as well clean, so if you can find a show that doesn't make you crazy it's even better, but just watch how excited they get. It's a whole new world out there for kids who can't read yet. It shows them how a story can look real, how it has pictures that someone thought up. Next they'll be telling you about a story they read and how they imagine it happens. Wow, imagination! Sure it's a sneaky way to get them involve, but I saw it's like love and war, whatever works is worth a try and it's all fair!
I love watching the involvement in these cartoons and the things they learn from them. "Mommy, that wasn't nice of him" makes me a little proud. I can't take her everywhere and show her every part of the world, but I can show her Caralot and kingdoms and what it's like to be a ballerina. All while having a nice snuggle and learning what it is that makes her happy, sad, and what kind of person she wants to be when she grows up.
They learn that family time is important, they learn to relax with their parents and not worry all the time about what they should and shouldnt' do, and they learn through having the same rituals we had that maybe we do understand what it's like to be them. We loved cartoons, and they love them. We dreamed of being a dancer just like they do. We spend Saturdays in our pajamas so they can too. Lossen up and have some cuddly, eating, realxing time.
Who knew Saturday cartoons could be so beneficial for family time.
