Almost every day now I read or hear something that just makes me say "wow"
This usually is a result of the lack of what I believe is common sense, and is helping me understand daily just what is wrong with this world lately and how messed up it's going to be in the future.
I'm sure that most of you have read the letter on FaceBook that was posted after someone wrote to a newspaper about moving the deer crossing sign. Apparently this reader felt it was in an unsafe place and was causing accidents, so the clear solution was to move the deer crossing. A few years ago this would have resulted in pity rather then humour, but now it just seems par for the course. Yes, we can move a sign and the deer will read it and cross somewhere else. That's why for years now we have just let them cross anwhere they want, we are all just too lazy to move the sign.
Today I heard a whole new story of just how ridiculous things are. Did you know that we are supposed to teach our children NOT to drive when they have taken drugs? Wow. I would think that we should teach our children not to TAKE drugs and that their own common sense and survival of the fitest attitude should make them understand that if you are taking mind altering substances you shouldn't drive. What kind of people are we raising that don't know that? It gets better. We are supposed to teach them that because in the war against drunk driving the are learning not to drive drunk, but apparently high is different. Perhaps MADD should become Mothers For Sober Driving instead. Let's just take "drunk" right out and teach people that clean and sober are the only ways to drive. Now I don't expect any groups to actually change their name, but clearly there are generations of people who don't seem to get it, if you can't drive drunk you shouldn't drive influenced by other stuff either. I personally will teach my child not to do drugs at all, you teach yours whatever you feel is best, and lets pray we both succeed.

I read something the other day that actually made me feel smarter. Instead of wondering what other people aren't taught or don't know, I was pleased that someone had taught me something. You shouldn't, as a rule, skate on a river, particularily a wide or deep one. Just in case you don't know why, it's because the river flows and moving water is less likely to freeze, and when it does it won't freeze all the way through. Shallow ponds freeze all the way, small lakes freeze pretty thick (not all the way! If they did ice fishing wouldn't work) and shallow streams can freeze well too. Water that is constantly moving will not freeze all the way through. Deep water won't freeze all the way. These are what I thought to be common sense things, don't skate down the middle of a "frozen" river... I was wrong. More people then I thought don't know that, even with the signs posted every winter.
Just a few more: don't leave kids or pets in a hot or cold car. Don't take animals into food establishments. When letting your bird fly around the house close the window. Don't lick frozen metal (ok, we all did this, but after freezing your tongue to a popsicle I'd think you'd know better). Shovel the snow before it's too heavy to lift on the shovel or you can't get the door open.
